Stop Struggling As A Parent With These Tips

Being a good parent requires more than just fathering or giving birth to a child. Being a good parent means giving your child what they need when they need it. This is true whether their needs are physical or emotional. The tips delineated below will help you to do just that.

The most important thing to remember while disciplining your children is consistency. Parenting during the terrible-two’s can be challenging, for both little one and adult. At this stage children like to push the limits of what is and is not allowed. Make sure that you set clear boundaries and are consistent with your time-outs so children know what is expected of them.

Use a pump or hand express milk if you are engorged and the baby is not ready to eat when breastfeeding. There are few things more painful to a new mother than having produced too much milk and not having a way to release it. Our bodies gradually start to produce only what is needed for the baby but it takes a little while to regulate. By expressing some of the milk you can reduce the pain until baby’s next meal.

Never administer medication to your child for any “off-label” conditions unless the child’s doctor has given you specific written instructions to do so. Children do not always react to medication in the same way adults do. For instance, giving a child Benadryl to help induce sleep might actually have the opposite effect of hyperactivity.

If you want your child to have a healthy emotional intelligence, make sure to validate their emotions and discuss emotional expression with them. Children learn when it is appropriate and inappropriate to express emotion – show them that emotions are a natural and valid means of expressing our feelings by labeling emotions for them, discussing both their and your emotional expressions, and validating their feelings.

Good parenting skills are not something we are born with. More importantly, they are not something that we always have when we bring a child into this world. Good parenting skills are learned through example. They are also learned through practice. The tips outlined above will start you on your way.
