How do I accept credit cards at outdoor craft shows?

Accepting credit and debit cards at an outdoor craft show is much easier to do than it might seem, and is something that can help increase your sales drastically by making it easier for potential customers to purchase your crafts. PayPal and ProPay each offer an online credit card processing system, with which you can easily accept credit cards at a craft fair.

ProPay

Propay offers an easy-to-use Internet-based credit card processing system for small business owners. With the basic ProPay service, merchants can process credit card orders via telephone or through the Internet, or can dispense email invoices to customers. When using ProPay at an outdoor craft show, simply record certain information from each customer–credit card number, expiration date, billing zip code and transaction amount. After the craft show, whenever you have access to the Internet, log into your ProPay account and enter the credit card information you recorded for each purchase made. Credit cards will not be processed until you have entered the information into your ProPay account, so you do need to trust that your buyers provide you with accurate credit card and billing information. If a card is declined, you will not get paid for your sale.

Once a credit card has been processed successfully, the funds are deposited into your ProPay account. You may then transfer funds from your ProPay account to your checking account. ProPay offers several different account options with varying yearly fees. Yearly fees range from $34.95 for the most basic account, to $299.95 for the most elaborate account (2010 pricing). To sign up for a ProPay account of any level, visit propay.com/account and click the “Sign Up Now!” button on the left hand side of the page. Sign up is very straightforward, and takes just 10 minutes.

ProPay MicroSecure Card Reader

If you sign up for any type of ProPay account, you can opt to purchase the ProPay MicroSecure Card Reader, which further increases the ease with which you can process credit card purchases at an outdoor craft show. The fully portable card reader costs approximately $90 and an extra $10 a year is charged for the card reader service. The MicroSecure Card Reader makes it easier to record credit card information and, if connected to a computer with Internet access, can process credit cards immediately. If, however, there is no Internet access at your outdoor craft show, you can still swipe cards with the reader; the necessary information for each card will be stored in the card reader until you are able to connect it (via USB) to your Internet-ready computer and process the orders through your ProPay account. The ProPay MicroSecure Card Reader can be purchased through the ProPay website.

PayPal Virtual Terminal

The PayPal Virtual Terminal works very similarly to the basic ProPay account. After recording certain credit card and billing information for each purchase, you can process the credit card via your online PayPal Virtual Terminal page. PayPal charges a small per-transaction fee for using the Virtual Terminal, in addition to $30 a month. To sign up for PayPpal Virtual Terminal, you must submit an application through PayPal, which includes information about your average monthly sales. Within 48 hours of submitting your application, you will be informed by PayPal as to whether you are able to sign up for a PayPal Virtual Terminal account.
